What exactly is a chip card?

A chip card or “EMV card” is a standard-size plastic debit card that contains an embedded microchip and a traditional magnetic stripe. The chip encrypts data which increases security when you make transactions at terminals or ATMs that are chip-enabled. EMV stands for Europay MasterCard and Visa, and refers to a more sophisticated payment technology.

Where can I use my Peoples Bank chip card?

Chip technology is very common in the US and around the world, including Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom. Your new chip card will still work at terminals and ATMs where only magnetic stripe transactions are accepted.

How Do I Use My New Card?

If the retailer is not able to accept chip/EMV cards, just swipe as you do now. For transactions made over the phone or online, nothing changes from how you do business with your current card. Some merchants may specifically designate the transaction has to be processed with a PIN or a signature. If so, simply execute it as requested. Your card does both.

Have recurring payments set up with your current card?

Your EMV debit card will have a new card number along with expiration date and CVV or “security” code on the back. You’ll want to update this new information on record with merchants you have previously authorized to automatically charge your account.

What about if I travel abroad?

Your Peoples Bank debit card will work around the world but you must let us know when and where you’ll be traveling. That way, we can make sure your card works properly at your destinations. Please contact us prior to leaving on your trip.

Will Peoples Bank chip ATM/debit card work at all ATMs?

Yes, Peoples Bank chip-enabled debit cards will work at chip-enabled ATM and ATMs where only magnetic stripe transactions are accepted.

1. Insert your Peoples card in the ATM to begin your transaction.
2. Follow the on-screen instructions
3. Remember that chip-enabled ATMs will “grab” and hold your card during the transaction.

Can I get cash back at a Point of Sale (POS) terminal and is there a fee for doing so?

Yes, where available and up to a certain amount. At the beginning of your transaction, be sure to ask your cashier if they offer cash back. If they do, you’ll need to type in your PIN which remains the same. Peoples Bank does not charge a fee for this feature.

What if I lose my card?

You can suspend and unsuspend lost or stolen debit cards using Peoples Online Banking and Mobile Banking Apps. Or you can call our Card Services Department at 1-866-546-8273, to report your card lost or stolen. You will not be responsible for unauthorized purchases.* To receive a replacement card, contact your local Peoples Bank location.
